Is propane the right choice for you?

propane supplier texas If you’re considering fueling your home or business with propane to save money on your energy bills in College Station, Madisonville, Bryan, Montgomery or the surrounding areas, you are on the right track. But what IS propane, exactly, and what can it do for you? Nontoxic propane is a central component of America’s energy solution because it is versatile, green, accessible, safe, and efficient. If you are new to propane, read on to learn about all the benefits of this amazing fuel!

The Basics of Propane

You’re probably somewhat familiar with propane – or at least, its popularity as a grill fuel – but many people don’t know where it actually comes from or how it works.

  • Propane is a low-carbon footprint fuel that’s a byproduct of the domestic natural gas collection process. When condensation is removed from natural gas pipelines, propane is collected.
  • Propane is nontoxic, colorless, and odorless, so suppliers add a rotten-egg scent to the fuel to make potential leaks easier to detect. Leaks aren’t common though, when propane is stored safely.
  • Propane occurs as a gas but is stored as liquid because it makes transport simpler, since liquid propane is nearly 270 times more compact as a liquid than a gas.

Benefits of propane

The benefits of propane are extensive, but some of our favorite “special powers” of this fuel include propane’s inherent:

  • Versatility: Propane can safely and efficiently power a wide range of indoor and outdoor appliances for both residential and commercial purposes, from water heaters and furnaces to indoor forklifts, torches, and welders. It’s portable, too – which is a big plus for construction and agricultural industries, or anybody who needs temporary heat.
  • Eco-friendliness: Propane earned its green status as a clean-burning fuel due to its nearly net-zero carbon emissions. Propane is natural and nontoxic. It doesn’t let off harmful greenhouse gases into the atmosphere, and it doesn’t hurt wildlife or contaminate water or soil if released into the environment.
  • Efficiency: Propane gives a big bang for your buck. Since propane naturally burns hotter, it feels warmer, and the energy produced creates a larger energy output – meaning you pay less to power your appliances and heat your space.
  • Reliability: No need to rely on the electrical infrastructure and utility companies for your fuel needs; with propane, you’re in control – if you want to be. Monitor your fuel yourself, or hand over the reins for watching your propane gauge and predicting your usage patterns to J&B Propane. We’ll make sure you’ll never run out of propane with our automatic delivery program.

More about What Is Propane?

Our Handy Guide Can Help You Decide

propane tanks texas When it comes to residential propane tanks, size matters. Whether you’re a new homeowner whose never run a home with propane, or you’re thinking of making the switch to propane, the pros at J and B can help you understand all your options when it comes to propane tank sizes.

You’re probably familiar with portable tanks like you use with a grill. They usually give their capacity in pounds. But residential propane tank size is usually given as their water capacity volume in gallons. Since propane is stored in a liquid state under pressure, it needs room to expand into a vapor. That’s why propane tanks are “filled” to 80% water capacity. For example, a 120-gallon tank will hold approximately 100 gallons of propane when completely full.

To know what size tank you need, you need to know how you will use your propane—just for cooking, or for heating water, heating your home, and more. There are a lot of variables to consider, and the pros at J & B are here to help you take the guesswork out of calculating the best size tank for your needs.

  • 40- to 100-pound cylinders: If you plan to use propane for a gas grill, patio heater, outdoor cookstove, or an RV, a refillable portable cylinder tank is what you want.
  • 120-gallon propane tank: This size tank is perfect if you only use propane just for water heating or space heating, or to fuel a range or clothes dryer.
  • 150-gallon propane tank: If you have one or two low-Btu appliances, such as a water heater, cooking range, space heaters, wall heaters or a clothes dryer, this size tank should provide ample propane.
  • 250-gallon propane tank: For three or more propane appliances like ranges, water heaters or fireplaces (but not a furnace or boiler) you may need to go up to this size.
  • 500-gallon propane tank: This is the minimum you’ll need if you heat your home with propane. You’ll have enough propane to also fuel appliances including fireplaces, ranges and water heaters.
  • 800- to 1,000-gallon propane tanks: This capacity will fuel a large home or small commercial business heated with propane that also uses several propane appliances as well as high-Btu propane appliances like pool and spa heaters.

Once we’ve helped you determine the best size tank for your needs, our pros can help determine the best location for your tank and make sure it’s installed safely. We’ve been installing tanks for all kinds of homes and businesses for more than 40 years. Whether your new to propane or just need to replace your tank, we’re here to answer all your questions.

How do I read my propane tank gauge?

propane supply texasReading your propane tank gauge is easy, once you’re familiar with the process and what the numbers on the device represent. As a Texas propane user, it’s an important skill to have and can actually save you money, avoid hassles, and help you steer clear of danger. Read on to learn more about what your propane gauge can tell you.

Why do I need to read my propane gauge?

If you’re not a propane expert, it makes sense that you might not know how to read your propane gauge, but it’s important to learn, for a few reasons:

  • Avoid danger: An empty propane tank can be dangerous, since excess air can get into the unit, causing your pilot light to go out, and creating a carbon monoxide buildup.
  • Ask an expert: Because of the danger if this situation occurs, it’s prudent to have a professional safely inspect your propane equipment before relighting your pilot light.
  • Never run out: Don’t get stuck without the fuel you need, when you need it most.

Fortunately, you can avoid these headaches simply by keeping an eye on your gauge and never letting your propane levels get dangerously low.

Propane readings: The 80/20 rule

Your propane gauge is measured in percentage units, typically from 10 percent or less, to 80 percent full.

  • Full at 80: Because propane is stored as a liquid in its tank, it needs room to expand and contract, due to temperatures and other conditions. This is why your tank is considered full when it is reading 80 percent.
  • Refuel at 20: A good rule of thumb is that you never want your tank to be less than 20 percent full. If you schedule your next propane delivery while your tank is at about 20 percent, you won’t be at risk of running out before your delivery arrives. This rule provides a little bit of buffer time so that even if there were a rare delay – severe weather or a roadway obstruction, for instance – your propane supply should last.

Our Keep Full delivery is the easiest way to avoid runouts

Our regular, or Keep Full delivery service is by far the most convenient and efficient approach for residential propane deliveries. Coping with rising fuel prices

propane costs texasHigher propane prices these days can be frustrating and even painful at times, but the good news is that propane remains one of the most cost-efficient ways to heat your Texas home and fuel your appliances. Read on to learn about how J&B Propane can be by your side to help you navigate the challenges that come with volatile fuel prices. You have options, and we can help!

Propane price changes are more moderate than other fuels

One benefit of choosing propane is that price swing trends tend to be more moderate for propane compared to heating oil, gasoline and other fuels derived from a barrel of crude oil. This is because propane is a totally domestic form of energy. The U.S. actually exports about twice as much propane to the rest of the world than we use in our own country!

Even though propane is still priced in the world market like oil is, this abundance of domestic North American supply gives us supply security and helps moderate the pricing in the U.S. In other words, you can count on propane!

Choose a propane provider you can rely on

Working with a propane provider you can trust gives you the peace of mind you need when the fuel market is volatile. Look for a company that:

  • Prioritizes safety: The team at J&B Propane has decades of experience in providing reliable propane delivery. Our staff of professional propane delivery drivers know the roads in the area inside and out. They’re trained and certified in the safe delivery of propane.

More about Save On Quality Propane Delivery & Service

This versatile fuel may be just what you need

why propane texasIf you’re looking to save money on your energy bills in College Station, Madisonville, Bryan, Montgomery or the surrounding areas, there is no need to look beyond propane. Nontoxic propane is a central component of America’s energy solution because it is versatile, green, accessible, safe, and efficient. If you are new to propane, read on to learn about all the benefits of this amazing fuel!

Propane is versatile

Propane’s capabilities go far beyond backyard grilling and heating your home or business. It can also safely and efficiently power a wide range of indoor and outdoor appliances for both residential and commercial purposes. Of course, homeowners love propane because it can save them money while reliably powering appliances, water heaters, and furnaces. Commercial warehouses and factories use propane as an economical source of heat, and propane’s low, nontoxic emissions also make it good for indoor forklifts, torches, and welders. It’s portable, too – which is a big plus for construction and agricultural industries.

Propane is eco-friendly

Propane has a very low carbon footprint because it is one of the cleanest-burning fossil fuels. Using propane appliances in your home instead of electric appliances can reduce your carbon emissions significantly:

  • Using propane instead of electricity for just heating alone produces up to one 1/3 fewer carbon emissions,
  • Using propane for both heating and powering appliances like water heaters, cooking ranges and clothes dryers produces up to 1/2 the carbon emissions of an all-electric house.

That’s because electricity plants use fossil fuels in the creation of electricity, even though the power source itself doesn’t emit harmful gases.

And because propane is nontoxic, it doesn’t hurt the environment, even if a leak does occur – which is very rare. Propane cannot damage the air, soil, water, plants, or the environment.

Propane is plentiful

Our country has an abundant supply of propane because most of this fuel is produced domestically – which means its availability and pricing is not much impacted by foreign conflicts. In fact, America’s supply of propane is so plentiful, we export propane abroad each year. In addition to being readily available, propane is safe and easy to store in a tank on your property. Unlike a natural gas customer, as a propane user you’re not at the mercy of a utility provider and its potential infrastructure problems.

Propane is safe and nontoxic

It’s easy to have peace of mind when you use propane. The National Fire Protection Association enforces strict guidelines for the handing of propane. As a result, propane has an extremely strong safety record. Propane is not as combustible as other fuels. And remember, it’s nontoxic.

Propane is efficient

Propane appliances operate more efficiently than electric appliances, which is good for your budget and your bottom line. Modern propane heating systems are capable of up to 98% efficiency, since propane water heaters, cooking ranges and clothes dryers get the job done in less time, using warmer heat. Using propane will keep your energy costs as low as possible!

You can trust the professionals at J&B Propane

Local and family-owned for more than 40 years, J&B Propane stands out from the crowd for so many reasons. Propane is natural and nontoxic. It doesn’t let off harmful greenhouse gases into the atmosphere, and it doesn’t hurt wildlife or contaminate water or soil if released into the environment.

Propane is versatile

Unlike many other fuels, propane has a very wide range of usability and can be beneficial for everything from your backyard grill to huge industrial vehicle fleets operating on propane AutoGas, to keeping your family warm, safe and comfortable all year. It’s also portable and useful for temporary construction heating, outdoor patio heaters, and forklift operations. It’s also perfect for bulk propane operations; in fact, propane’s versatility is what makes it ideal for your farming operation. Its portability and reliability make it easy to use—and you won’t need to rely on an energy utility for curing, heating, or powering your equipment.
